How to get involved with the Santa Shoebox Project

What is the Santa Shoebox Project?

With “share the joy of giving” at its heart, the Santa Shoebox Project provides the community with a chance to give to those in need.

“The project offers people from all walks of life the chance to participate in a profoundly valuable and personal experience, enriching the lives of both those doing the giving and those on the receiving end,” said Margie Kostelac, regional coordinator.

“Donors are encouraged to involve their own children in the process of personally selecting the name of a child from one of the centres or children’s homes, and putting together his or her individualised, age-appropriate Santa Shoebox gift.

“This means that each participant knows the first name, age and gender of the child.”

The gift boxes have to be filled according to the guidelines provided, which include some practical necessities, such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, face cloths, soap and educational supplies.

Other objects that should appear in the shoebox are sweets, a toy and an item of clothing.

“Donors and volunteers agree that it is the personal touch of the gift that endears the project to adults and children year after year,” Kostelac added.
