The wonder of Ecotourism

The Germiston Probus Club discuss the advantages of ecotourism at it's monthly meeting.

The Germiston Probus Club hosted its monthly meeting, last Tuesday.

The meeting, which took place at the Germiston/Deville Bowling Club, listened to a talk on ecotourism by guest speaker Brent Record, from Vereeniging.

This form of tourism involves visiting fragile, pristine and relatively undisturbed natural areas.

The tours are intended as low-impact and often small scale alternatives to standard commercial tourism.

The main purpose of ecotourism is to educate the traveller, while providing funds for ecological conservation.

Record visited Antarctica 10 years ago, on one such tour.

“We travelled along the Antarctic Peninsula in a boat, viewing animals and learning about the landscape,” he explained.

Record encouraged others to take such trips.
