Local learners invited to Wits for a course

“The competition was stiff, and Edenglen High School was unfortunate not to be placed in the top three.”

Five Edenglen High School learners recently attended the Wits Integrated Experience (WIE) course.

Hosted by the University of Witwatersrand, 40 other schools participated.

The learners were given a scenario in which a sizeable meteor would collide with Earth near Johannesburg.

They then went to various faculties on the campus, where each faculty dealt with a different aspect of the scenario.

They challenged the learners to investigate the problem and derive an action plan.

Three prizes were up for grabs as incentives for the learners.

With the help of the visual arts department, which built them a polystyrene meteor, and weeks of practice, the learners presented to three judges.

Edenglen High’s public relations and marketing co-ordinator, Itumeleng Gwangwa, said the presentation was amusing and highly enlightening.

“The competition was stiff, and Edenglen High School was unfortunate not to be placed in the top three,” said Gwangwa.
