GERMISTON POWER OUTAGE: Testing of cable has started

In response to residents’ pleas for updates regarding the current power outage in large parts of Germiston, Eskom reported that after contractors excavated the old cable on Walnut Street, testing the stability of the same cable has commenced.

Once the results are available the contractor will be able to proceed with the repairs.

Eskom commented that the fault on the cable is about 1.5km from the Germiston North substation.

Prior to the excavation, Eskom had to obtain an emergency wayleave from the City of Ekurhuleni to permit workers to start with the excavation on the side of the road.

Excavations started upon receipt of the approved emergency wayleave.

The purpose of the excavation was to expose the cable and cut the section with a fault and thereafter start joining the cable.

The process required workers to follow technical specifications and standards.

At mid-day on June 22, Eskom was still unable to provide an estimated time of restoration.

“We are doing our best to make sure that supply is restored to the municipality,” said Eskom in a statement.

City of Ekurhuleni has provided water tankers to mitigate the effects of the water outage affecting Germiston because of the power outage affecting pump stations in the area.

The power failure has resulted in a total stoppage of pumping of water at Windsor and Churchill pump station.
Tankers were dispatched to Dawnview, Primose East, Sunnyrock, Sunnyridge, Homestead, Gerdview, Wannenburghoogte, Marlands, Rustivia and Woodmere.
