News safety app launched by local CPF

The BCPF said the app works with several security companies and whichever security company is nearest will respond to the emergency.

The Bedfordview CPF in conjunction with associated security companies have launched a new safety app.

Safer City is a GPS panic app which features crime reporting, medical response and a help desk.

For every subscriber to the app, a donation of 14.5% of its revenue goes to the CPF.

BCPF’s public relations offer Laura Ausker said the idea was presented by Bedfordview’s Tactical Security Company.

According to Ausker, the company managed to get the go-ahead from the CPF’s provisional board for the app to be rolled out through the CPF.

“If you press the panic button, whichever security company is nearest, will respond. You pay a monthly fee and a portion of that money goes to the CPF as a donation.

“The more members of the community download the app it also helps with our fundraising,” explained Ausker.

BCPF head of patrollers Jacques Steyn said people are realising the need and value for security apps in the country.

He said this is evident as many residents have already signed up as they hope for more residents to join in.

“Let’s say you driving to Joburg South and there’s a hijacking or you need medical assistance you can press the button and help will be on the way.

“The app also links the community with counsellors for traumatic situations.

“Areas such as Elandsfontein and Klopperpark can’t afford a security company, so this app can help bridge that gap,” added Steyn.

The organisation has also appealed to its residents when hiring foreign nationals to ensure they have the correct documentation.

They are also urged not to donate to vagrants as it is leading to an influx in the area.
