Ekurhuleni employee shot and injured at Germiston waste depot

A City of Ekurhuleni employee was shot and injured on June 14 at the Ekurhuleni waste depot in Germiston.

The victim (unnamed for security reasons) was shot in the upper body by an unknown male suspect when he reported for duty at around 07:30.

He then rushed to hospital by fellow colleagues immediately after the incident.

The MMC for Environmental Resource and Waste Management Eunice Matloga has called on the law enforcement agencies to work in cohesion to apprehend the suspect who shot and injured the city employee.

Matloga wished the victim a speedy recovery and also visited the scene of the incident later on the day.

“The city condemns such heinous acts of crime especially in the workplace.

“We call upon the police and other security agencies to act swiftly in apprehending the perpetrator so that he can be subjected to the full might of the law,” said Matloga.

Addressing the workers at the depot, Matloga encouraged them to continue working hard emphasising that their contribution in society was ‘critical and huge’.

“Your safety is our main concern and we do not wish to see a situation where you now scared to report for duty or discharge your responsibilities because of fear.

“This incident is an eye-opener for us to beef up the security in our facilities to guarantee your safety,” said Matloga.

Matloga urges city workers to come forward for psycho-social support, adding that the services have been organised for all workers.

The incident had a slight impact on both litter picking and round collections services.

The following day, CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said that security was being beefed up, and the suspect was still on the loose.

“Public participation is key. Anyone with information is implored to forward same to the police. Investigations are underway,” said Dlamini.
