CGA host third league meeting

Central Gauteng Athletics is halfway through the 2023 Cross Country Season.

Central Gauteng Athletics successfully hosted its third Cross Country League meeting on June 3 in collaboration with Harambe AC.

The league was supported by over 1 400 athletes at Dobsonville community hall.

Athletes stood to the test during the third league meeting.

The senior men’s 2km event saw Boikanyo Mothlamme of UJ dominate the race to win in a time of 06:26.

In a post-event interview, Mothlamme highlighted that this wasn’t an easy race but he looks forward to other meetings as he builds momentum towards the provincial championships to ultimately qualify for the national championships.

Teammate Nicholas Whittaker was second, clocking 06:36, followed by Jason Vermeulen of Varsity Kudus in a time of 06:44.

Fina Dube of Boxer Athletics Club clocked 08:09, winning the senior women’s 2km event.

The Ramatladi twins in Waterfall colours claimed the second and third positions, clocking 08:24 and 08:28 respectively.

PR and communications intern Nongcebo Siziba said Tyran Brooks of Boxer continued his dominance since the first league meeting of the CGA cross-country season in the provincial development ages categories, boys U14 category.

“Brooks again won the 4km Dobsonville course in a time of 13:58. The athlete shows great dedication to the sport.

“Finishing second was Siyanda Malone of Tembisa in a time of 14:42, who also did well in the second meeting of the league. Cyril Moremi of Murray and Roberts came third in the time of 15:03,” said Siziba.

All eyes were on the 10km open men and women race which is classified as the main event and the last event of the day.

With more than 50 athletes on the starting line battling it out, Nkosinathi Sibiya of UJ dominated the senior men’s race finishing in a time of 33:29.

“In second place was Simphiwe Thobela of Waterfall City, clocking 34:34. Third place in a time 35:02 went to Mzwakhe Mashaba of Boxer,” said CGA Cross Country Commission chairperson Val Brentano.

“The women’s race title was also up for grabs as the previous top finishers were representing the province at the National Half Marathon Championships.

“We saw Sisanda Dumisa of UJ clocking 30:03 to secure gold and in the colours of Rockies, Farida Zwane took silver in a time of 40:26.

“2023 national junior 5000m champion Ntokozo Gumede took the last place on the podium in a time of 41:38.”
