As winter approaches, the two stations have received many complaints and reports ranging from car hijackings to petty crimes and robberies at gunpoint.

Germiston SAPS communications officer Constable Maxwell Mabunda said residents must be cautious in isolated areas.

Members of the Primrose Youth Desk and other stakeholders hosted an awareness campaign in Wychwood on February 25 to hand out safety tip pamphlets.

“When walking alone for your safety, please remove your earphones because you can easily make yourself a target for criminals.

“Criminals already know you might have a valuable gadget and start following you,” explained Mabunda.

He also encouraged college and high school learners to always walk in pairs, especially after 16:00.

“Another concern is the safety of motorists. When driving alone at night, make sure your doors are locked and windows sealed before stopping at the traffic lights. If you are dropping a child off at preschool in the morning, make sure your car is parked at a visible distance.

“Residents must exercise caution when driving on the highways. We received reports of attempted car hijackings on our main roads. In most cases, the driver was alone in the car,” said Mabunda.

The Primrose SAPS warned residents about car and business robberies on Wychwood and Rietfontein roads.

He said motorists must check by hand to confirm their cars are locked before heading off to do their shopping.

“Rietfontein Road is one of the notorious roads as far as vehicle and business robberies are concerned,” said Primrose SAPS corporate communication officer Sergeant Styles Moame.

“Suspects have been arrested in relation to business robberies in Rietfontein. The SAPS continues to keep a sharp eye on this road to promote safety,” he said.

Maome also warned residents in the informal settlements to be vigilant in the morning when going to work.

“Business operators with ATMs should exercise caution and install extra security.
