Elite athletes face off at CGA’s third meeting

CGA’s 3rd 2023 Track and Field League Meet featured elite athletes.

Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) hosted its third league meeting on February 4 at Germiston Stadium.

The meeting was graced by elite athletes who are preparing for the World Athletics Cross Country Championships, which will be taking place later this month in Australia.

Over 1 000 athletes entered this league, which was supported by athletes from sister provinces to test their performances and readiness for the national championships scheduled late in March.

The day took off with field events. A highlight was in the boy’s U16 shotput when Keanu Nel of UJ claimed gold with a throw of 15.67. In second place was Dewald Prinsloo with a distance of 14.90 and third position went to Marno White with a distance of 13.70.

In the 400m senior men event, Boikanyo Motlhamme of UJ dominated from the start to secure first place clocking a time of 48:79.

“Motlhamme has shown great fitness in all previous meetings this season. Siyabonga Mtsweni who finished second in the time of 48:83 and third place in the time 49:70 was Keaton Ryan from Germiston Callies,” said CGA communications intern Nongcebo Siziba.

“The 5 000m senior men event provided an all athletics experience with runners giving us a showstopper race.

“In the starting line, 13 athletes were CGA’s considered elite athletes like Maxime Chaumeton who displayed a stunning performance with his stable run to secure first place in a time of 13:57.76,” said Siziba.

Precious Mashele of Boxer also displayed great form by clocking 13:57.84 to secure the second position.

In third place was the rising star of the province Nicholas Seoposengwe who recorded a time of 14:05.58. Ryan Mphahlele finished fourth clocking 14:28.10.

Another track event that got spectators up on the grandstands was the U16 girl’s 300m hurdles. Caylen Jenkins of Nories dominated the event in her time of 44.04 followed by her teammate Monique Smit claiming the second position in 49.54.

Zoe Oosthuizen from Monnas finished third in 50.93.
