New season for Central Gauteng Athletics season starts

CGA successfully kicks off this year's track and field season.

The Central Gauteng Athletics (CGA) track and field season started on January 14 at the Germiston Stadium.

The impressive turnout left organisers with the impression that this will be an exciting season for athletes and spectators.

Oluchi Ndubueze claimed gold in the girls’ U16 100m, first place in the U6 200m event and second place in the U16 long jump.

“The day started with race walking, which counted as the second race walk league event for 2023. The CGA race-walk committee chairperson, Nthatisi Mokhele, took part in the final senior women’s 10km event.

She claimed silver, and Marissa Swanepoel took first place,” said communications intern, Nongcebo Siziba.

In the senior women’s 5 000m event, Cian Oldknow maintained the lead from the start to cross the finish line in 16:31. In second place was Lebo Phalula with a time of 17:07. Kefilwe Molefe secured third place in 18:20.

The event was combined with the U20 girls and the CGA’s 2022 Junior Athlete of the Year winner, Naledi Makgatha, took first place in 18:43.

The CGA’s track and field seasonstarted at the Germiston Stadium on January 14.

“The senior men’s and men’s U20 5 000m event was a showstopper as we saw great competition,” said Siziba.

In the men’s U20 category, Sibusiso Msibi of Tembisa Athletics Club gave CGA’s 2022 Most Promising Athlete of the Year title winner, Johannes Morepe, a strong challenge to claim first place in 15:21.91.

Morepe took the second spot in 15:46.
