Red Star Festival of racing all about noise, action and winning

The tight corners and short straight of this track dictate total focus and hard braking, or you will find your self in the rough.

Red Star Raceway delivered a splendid day of Northern Regions Festival racing outside Delmas in Mpumalanga on Saturday, October 8.

It was action all the way as the Pabar VW Challenge, Lotus Challenge, Car Care Clinic Superhatch and 111s, and On Track magazine Clubmans and NSRC Sportscars starred in their penultimate round Gauteng championship races.

Rory Atkinson was the biggest winner as he scored a grand slam of pole position, two wins and the fastest lap of the day to clinch the overall Pabar VW Challenge championship. Stiaan Kriel and Wayne Masters were second and third in both races. Lady racer Elna Croeser and Bevan Williams shared the Class B wins, but Hannes Scheepers wrapped up that class title. Ian Walker also clinched the Class C championship with a grand slam on the day.

Jeffrey Kruger meanwhile gained revenge with a double Lotus Challenge victory over his title rival Thomas Falkiner after a difficult run last time out. Rudi Barnard, Andre Human, John Kruger and David Coetzee followed in that order, in both races. Andries du Plessis and Sean Hepburn shared the Locost class wins, Du Plessis from Davide Favo and Juan du Toit in race 1 and Hepburn from Du Plessis and Miles Downard in the second heat.

George Economides’ Golf 1 took the opening Car Care Clinic 111 GT Sports & Saloon car race from Phillip Meyer’s Porsche, Kobus Brits and Adrian Dalton and Johan van Heerden’s Golfs. Meyer turned the tables on Dalton in race 2, from Piet Potgieter, Kobus Brits’ Toyota, Wouter Roos and Wayne Lebotschy’s Golfs and Johan van der Vyver in a Subaru.

Lenard Archer’s Hyundai Getz took Car Care Clinic Superhatch victory from Karel Stols’ Toyota Etios, Andre de Lange, and Andre Dannhauser. Christiaan van Wyk beat Nic Martin’s Peugeot and Melanie Spurr’s Polo to Class B honours, and Devon Piazza-Musso won Class C from Francis Aldrich.

The combined On Track magazine Clubmans and NSRC Sportscars were treated to three heats on the day, all of which Sportscar man Pieter Zeelie won at a canter in his Nardini. Behind him, Kobus Brits took the opening Clubmans win in his Toyota Etios from Phillip Meyer, Dirk Lawrence and Eugene Gouws’ Chevy Can Am. Meyer was second from Lawrence and Gouws in race 2, and from Brits 6 and Gouws in the final.

The Northern Regions Festival racing season wraps up at Zwartkops Raceway west of Pretoria on Saturday, November 12.
