Elsburg police address school safety in Germiston

Police called a community meeting to address issues of gangsterism at a high school in Germiston.

Elsburg SAPS conducted a community meeting with Elsburg CPF, SGB and Gauteng East Education District officials at a high school in Rondebult area, Germiston, on July 30.

The purpose of the meeting was to address parents on concerns about incidents inside and outside the school yard, including stabbings.

Sergeant Daphney Phooko, Elsburg SAPS communication officer said it was established that fights start in taverns and spill into school grounds, involving learners.

“Parents were also informed about issues affecting the process of learning and teaching at the school,” she said.

During the deliberations, the following were resolved:

• Poor attendance by parents need to be addressed.

“We need to arrange another meeting which will include the community of Rondebult,” said Phooko.

• Community leaders were requested to arrange a campaign on anti-gangsterism to mobilise and sensitise the community about these type of activities.

• The community was urged to assist the school to address learners arriving late at school and lack of discipline.

• Parents were reminded to be part of their children’s education.

The community requested that police conduct the following programmes:

• School searches and removal of illegal items from school grounds.

• Anti-gangsterism sessions with community members.
