It was previously reported that residents marched to the Germiston Civic Centre to hand over the memorandum to MMC of Energy Senzi Nkosi on July 6.

Power outages, illegal connections, cable theft, vandalism of public infrastructure, and repair of roads were among the concerns.

Residents gave CoE seven working days to reply to the memorandum.

Resident Janet Gerretsen said they requested feedback by July 15.

“On July 9 at a community meeting held at Victoria Hall at the Germiston Lake with the mayor, the council officials assured us that they will have feedback on the issues presented to them by residents,” said Gerretsen.

“Residents have in a few instances been pleasantly surprised that things seem to be taking a turn for the better but on the whole, none of the concerns raised has been addressed, and not much has changed,” she said.

“Residents at their costs have been repairing potholes and businesses hired workers to clean our streets.

“We requested another meeting with the mayor and her MMCs, divisional heads and heads of department, but we still await a reply,” said Gerretsen.

Resident Barend Lewis said: “A month since we handed over our grievances, there is still no real interaction or great improvement,” said Lewis.

“We are only told the mayor’s office will keep all role players informed as to progress on those matters,” said Lewis.

“We did everything by the book. We organised a peaceful march with respect.

“Why must residents result in riots, burning of tyres and damage to infrastructure before their voices and demands are heard?

“We send follow-up emails and messages to councillors and MMCs but we have been met with silence.

“We want to have a constructive meeting and a road map forward on how we can work together in getting our concerns resolved,” said Lewis.

GCN requested a comment from CoE by August 5 at 13:00.

At the time of going to print, no comment had been received.
