Police arrest suspect with unlicensed gun

The suspect will appear in Germiston Magistrate Court soon

Police apprehended a suspect for possession of an unlicensed firearm and live rounds of ammunition on Tuesday, May 24.

At about 22:25 while patrolling at Rappa Resources, a security guard saw a man approaching him. The security guard asked him where he was going and he informed the guard that he was with two friends collecting scrap metals, but he lost them.

Sergeant Styles Maome of Primrose SAPS corporate communications, said the guard instructed him to sit down so that he can assist him.

“The security guard asked for backup from his unit leader and on his arrival, the guard searched the suspect. On his waist he found a firearm loaded with two live rounds of ammunition and two cellphones,” said Maome.

“He was taken to Primrose police station. While busy with his statement to the police a call of complaint came through. The arrested man was described by the complainant over the phone as the man who robbed him of his cellphone in the morning of the same day,” he said.

“The complainant described his cellphone make and it matched one of the two found on the suspect. The suspect was detained and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition and armed robbery. The suspect will appear in Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon,” said Maome.

“The station commander, Colonel Eunice Nzuzà, encouraged the community to report criminal activities to the police to keep Primrose safe,” said Maome.
