In a statement, he stated how difficult it was for him to make the decision but believed it was necessary as he did not agree with some decisions.

“I had done what I believed was the right thing to do and released the inputs received through the budget tips email address to councillors as I believe in transparency.

I have not received the consolidated reports from the IDP meetings and other sources but would have done the same with those,” said Gersbach.

He stated the mayor was not happy with his decision but felt that his principled decision was not in line with her views and that it was best to resign as an MMC.

“What concerns me is the officials have almost finalised the revised budget and adjustment budget without any evidence of responses to inputs received. This is not in line with meaningful public participation, which I have always thought the DA truly believes in. Even if you disagree with the inputs, you need to respond with reasons.

This is not easy but is the right thing to do,” said Gersbach.

He said he still believes in the principles and values of the DA and will continue to speak up when and where he believes it is needed.

“I will remain a DA councillor as I feel I still have a contribution to make. I am wishing the Mayoral Committee and those concerned all the best in their future endeavours but I will always question them when I feel it is necessary,” said Gersbach.

The mayor’s office has confirmed Gersbach’s resignation but said the Executive Mayor, Ald Tania Campbell has decided not to accept his resignation. “As it stands, the mayor is applying her mind on the matter. In the meantime MMC Alderman Heather Hart will act as the interim MMC for Finance and Economic Development,” said a spokesperson for the executive mayor, Phakamile Mbengashe.
