The spokesperson for the Cleveland SAPS, Capt Johan Jordaan, said a white truck travelling through Heriotdale was stopped by an unknown number of suspects dressed in police and metro police uniforms.

“One man dressed in a metro police uniform pulled the truck driver out of the vehicle.”

He added that two vehicles blocked the road before multiple armed suspects exited the vehicles.

“The suspects were armed with pistols and automatic rifles. The driver of the escort vehicle witnessed the intended crime unfolding and opened fire at the suspects,” Jordaan said.

“The suspects fled the scene in two white BMW vehicles.”
Jordaan said investigations led to the recovery of three pistols and one automatic rifle, as well as live ammunition.

“A cellphone and radio jammer was also found in one of the vehicles on scene.”

Jordaan confirmed the case was transferred to the provincial task team for investigation.
