“Problem is that people are willing to buy these cables, therefore supporting the crime,” said Ralushe.

“The community of Elsburg is begging leaders to take action,” he said.

In 2020 a number of meetings were held to discuss the level of crime in Elsburg with Gauteng community safety MEC Faith Mazibuko.

“The community requested a meeting with newly elected Ward 39 Clr Jean Ingram to offer direction and advice on how the City of Ekurhuleni will address such problems,” said Ralushe.

Newly elected Ward 39 councillor Jean Ingram said she is aware of challenges in Elsburg and she looking at long-term solutions.

Ingram said she is aware of the challenges facing Elsburg and surrounding areas and that she is already looking at finding solutions.

“I am in negotiations with the EMPD, energy department, building inspectors and emergency services to begin operations throughout the ward to tackle the power cable theft issues as well as by law infringements,” said Ingram.

She said in the meantime the short term solution is for residents to report cable thefts.

“We encourage residents to report any suspicious activity with the potential of tampering with power infrastructure. They must contact their security company, the CPF, or me immediately on 065 808 8151,” said Ingram.

She said through the talks with relevant parties she is looking into long-term solutions.

“There are numerous issues in the ward which I am systematically attending to,” said Ingram.
