“My husband and I are estate agents in the Boksburg and Germiston area and, after selling several elderly people’s homes, we realised the elderly are battling financially and are also lonely. We wanted to find a way to assist them,” said Rochelle.

She said most elderly people enjoy making homemade goods, so the Veales thought of a way to assist them by showcasing and selling their work.

“Our garden is big and pretty, so we thought why not have it there. We then decided to open it up to the Golden Oldies for a monthly market.

“This market not only allows them to make some money, but it is also a social day for them to be with other people in a relaxed, safe environment,” said Rochelle.

She said the market has been received well by the elderly.

“New friendships have been formed and the elderly get excited about getting together at their market every month,” said Rochelle.

All the exhibitors are over the age of 60 and all their goodies are handmade.

The pensioners do not pay for a stall, so every cent they make goes towards making their lives a little easier.

“We invite the community to come through and enjoy a beautiful garden and find some beautiful treasures in the homemade items,” said Rochelle.
