Sunnyridge businesses affected leaking sewage

"The number of people coming to our shop has decreased because of the smell - it stinks."

A burst sewage pipe on Koedoe Street, Sunnyridge, is affecting businesses and is creating health issues.

Deon Venter, a business owner in the area, said the leaking sewage has a negative impact on his business.

“As a food outlet, we are affected by the sewage negatively. It impacts the number of customers coming to the business.

“It also gives new customers a bad perception of the area and the business itself because they come here with expectations.

“For the past two years it has burst several times. We have reported the problem, but it hasn’t received any attention from the municipality,” said Venter.

While business owners hope the problem will be resolved soon, Venter told GCN he has fond memories of his business, which has been operating for 14 years.

“Though our business is 20% alcohol and 80%, food we miss having some faces who came regularly to watch sports.

“Covid-19 changed the dynamics of how we run our business – most people now call in for orders and come to collect,” said Venter.

Masum Farabe, a Sunnyridge supermarket owner, also commented on the issue of the leaking sewage as it is outside his business.

“This problem destroys the reputation and image of my business. We have reported it almost a week ago and no one has dealt with it,” he told GCN on Tuesday last week.

“The number of people coming to our shop has decreased because of the smell – it stinks. You can’t buy and eat on the spot because of the smell.

“There is also a concern for some of the children who play in the area due to health risks,” said Farabe.

GCN sent a request for comment on the concerns raised by business owners.
