Hani remembered by Ramaphosa

The spirit of Hani will live on.

The City of Ekurhuleni hosted the 28th Chris Hani commemoration last weekend, where wreaths were laid in honour of the late Hani. The event was held at Thomas Titus Nkobi Memorial Park in Elspark and was attended by President Cyril Ramaphosa and other dignitaries. It has been 28 years since Hani was gunned down outside his home in Dawn Park in 1993.

The president and many of the speakers described him as a man of unity and peace.

“Hani was a soldier for peace, he will remain deeply in our hearts. The spirit of Hani will live on. “If we work together, we can destroy the demon of division among us,” said Ramaphosa.

He said in times like these, Hani would have said, “Our freedom is priceless. We should jealously guard it for the sake of our children and future generations.”

Hani’s wife, Limpho Hani, spoke about her husband’s loyalty to people and unity.

“Chris was a man of peace. I’m happy to see different party leaders present today. I would like to thank you for honouring our invitation,” said Limpho.

Chris Hani’s gravesite was declared a heritage site in 2017.
