Germiston High get a 93 per cent pass rate

Fumani Baloyi was the best-performing matriculant with seven distinctions.

Germiston High School (GHS) was one of the many schools in Germiston to celebrate its matriculants recently. Fumani Baloyi was the best-performing matriculant with seven distinctions in accounting, Afrikaans first additional language, English home language, life orientation, life sciences, mathematics and physical sciences.
He said he felt elated and pleased.

“This was a target I set for myself, despite slight disappointment here and there; to achieve the crux of what I had been yearning for is beyond words.”
Fumani plans to study medicine, specialising in epidemiology or oncology.

“My advice to the Class of 2021 is for them to be well aware of what they want in life and ensure that they work with that in mind. “They should know that all they do and work for this year is towards achieving that greater goal,” said Fumani.

According to GHS principal Renée Goosen, the school’s overall pass rate was 93 per cent. “Our bachelor’s pass rate escalated to a healthy 56 per cent. The quality of our passes has therefore shown a marked improvement where this group obtained a total of 50 distinctions.”

2020 was a difficult year for matrics

Like every other school, their biggest challenge was the Covid-19 pandemic. The principal said their Grade 12s lost many privileges and had to adjust to the new normal quickly.

“They were forced to mature overnight and learn to focus fully on academic achievement. Extra lessons were no longer possible, so we turned to various online solutions. “The matriculants were also given as much pastoral care as possible to keep them motivated. They played their part by quickly realising that their choices would determine their future success or failure. “Our Grade 12 educators and their strong and unselfish work ethic carried our learners through. We had to change venues for the matric teachers to accommodate social distancing. “Despite the challenges presented with keeping the school safe for our learners and staff, we had a strong Grade 12 group who worked tirelessly to achieve these pleasing results,” said the principal.
