Authorities remove drugs and illegal liquor off the streets

The operation was conducted in Edenvale and Germiston

In a joint operation, members of EPMD and SAPS arrested a suspected drug dealer and four others for contravening the Liquor Act.

The operation was conducted in Edenvale and Germiston on October 17 and saw officers from EMPD’s Drug Enforcement Unit, Southern Region First Response units and Germiston North Precinct officers participate.

Kobeli Mokheseng, EMPD spokesperson, said a 45-year-old suspect was arrested at a Van Riebeck Avenue property after narcotics worth R360 000 were found in his possession.

“Officers found 40 packets of khat and one package and two ziplock bags of crystal meth valued at R360 000. The suspect was handcuffed and taken to Edenvale Police Station,” said Mokheseng.

“The possible undocumented Nigerian national and potential drug supplier is facing charges of possession and dealing in illicit substance.”

Mokheseng said the 45-year-old was charged with falsifying official documents due to the condition of his asylum-seeker documents and charged in relation to the Immigration Act.

Mokheseng said after receiving numerous complaints of loud music and illegally operated taverns, officers conducted an operation in the Makause informal settlement.

“Four male pub owners between the ages of 24 and 43, operating without required permits, were arrested for contravening the Liquor Act.

“Eighteen crates of beer and ciders were seized and taken to Primrose Police Station.”

While in Makause, officers responded to the sound of gunshots near Stanley Road.

Upon arrival on the scene, they found the body of a man in his late 20s shot in the upper body.

SAPS officers took over the investigation of the shooting.

Mokheseng said the arrested suspects are expected to appear in the Edenvale and Germiston magistrate’s courts respectively.
