Community cleans up Oval Park

The community said it was time for them to reclaim their park.

On October 3, the community of Symhurst in Germiston came together to clean up Oval Park.

The community said it was time for them to reclaim their park.
Community member Carol Botha said the park has not been used since lockdown started and was starting to attract crime.

“The community park had not been cleaned since lockdown with parks department not being able to work,” said Botha.

“We were worried it could become a security hazard and decided to take matters into our own hands and clean the park,” said Botha.

Community members Botha, Wellington Mkhize, Vusi Nkosi, and Tammy and Dirk du Plooy obtained the necessary permission from the City of Ekurhuleni and ward councillor to clean the park.

Local businesses also got involved in helping with the clean-up.

Fidelity ADT provided two vehicles to watch over and keep the community members safe as they went about cleaning the park and a garden service company, Garden Force, donated cleaning equipment, petrol and the services of five members of its team.

“Thank you to Garden Force and Fidelity ADT for providing the vehicles and keeping us safe while we worked. It was especially great to see Milly Barnard from Fidelity and her husband rake in hand and getting stuck into the cleaning as well.

“It’s nice to know we still have good, helpful, genuine people in our society. The day went down so well it really exceeded all of our expectations,” said Botha.

Barnard said they were happy to join the community for a clean-up because they service the community as a security company.

“We believe being involved in such community clean-ups is a great way to connect with our communities. A clean park becomes a crime-free park, and we all really enjoyed the day.”
