Primrose youth desk bridges the communication gap between police and the youth

Primrose Police Station youth desk public relations officer Chantel Bergman is passionate about helping her community, which was one of the reasons she joined the group.

“As the youth, we are often reluctant to be involved in community issues, but I’m my passionate about helping people. Young people always feel volunteering does not benefit anyone, but it depends on where you decide to focus your volunteering efforts. I know I can make a real difference in the lives of those who need the help,” Chantel said.

Primrose youth desk hosts several activities in the area and encourages people to support these initiatives.

“We do door-to-door awareness on different topics. We share safety tips and crime activities. We also conduct school talks and searches,” said Chantel.

She said the community they serve has a number of challenges like poverty and unemployment and the youth desk aims to assist where possible.

“We collect clothes and other things the community might need and we give to those in need in informal settlements,” said Chantel.

“Creating the platform for the youth to be able to communicate with the police has made a huge difference. The youth with the help of the youth desk can now easily communicate with the police and no longer be scared to come forward and lay their complaints,” said Chantel.

She said when the youth come in and lay a complaint or indicate they need counselling the youth desk refers them to the victim empowerment centre.

For those who are interested in helping the youth and want to volunteer can visit the Primrose Police Station at 27 Poppy Road in Primrose.
