Rondebult not happy about service delivery

"We are tax-paying citizens. We pay our municipal bills, water, rates and taxes. But we are not getting what we pay for."

The community of Rondebult said for the past three years they have not been happy with how the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE) has been handling their service delivery concerns.

Rondebult community chairperson Tshepo Vilakazi said the community has been requesting and trying to communicate their concerns with the city, to no avail.

“We are tax-paying citizens. We pay our municipal bills, water, rates and taxes. But we are not getting what we pay for. Something has to be done. Our community members’ voices and struggles need to be heard and attended to,” said Vilakazi.

The Rondebult area has experienced a number of issues, from electricity outages and street lights not working to low water pressure.

According to the chairperson, these problems have been ongoing. The residents recently handed over a petition to CoE and are yet to receive a response.

“This was not the first petition ignored by the city,” said Vilakazi. He said the community is willing to work with the city in making sure the area receives service delivery.

CoE divisional head of communication and media relations Nhlanhla Cebekhulu acknowledged CoE has received the petition.

“The water and sanitation department recently received the petition through CoE’s approved petitions process,” said Cebekhulu.

“The low water pressure experienced during peak consumption periods in this area is as a result of the increase in developments in the Cossins reservoir zone, which also supplies Ward 41. The current zone is supplied through the existing eight megalitre Cossins road reservoir.

“To increase water storage and improve water pressures, the water and sanitation department is in the process of constructing an additional 30 megalitre Cossins road reservoir, as well as an additional supply pipeline from Rand Water connection, RW4529,” said Cebekhulu.

She said the construction is expected to be completed by June 2021.

“Once construction is completed, the zone will have long-term sufficient water storage requirements and subsequently improve the water pressures to Ward 41. In the meantime, all low water pressure and no water complaints should be reported to the municipal services call centre for intervention by the department,” said Cebekhulu.

CoE did not provide comment on the remaining concerns raised by Rondebult residents.
