Elderly woman allegedly recruits young boys to sell dagga and cigarettes

The Germiston SAPS apprehended seven suspects on a charges of dealing in dagga and contravening the Disaster Management Act (Covid-19 Act).

While on patrol in Delville on Tuesday afternoon, officers from the Germiston Police Station received a tip-off about six young boys selling dagga and cigarettes.

“Using the information received the officers traced the suspects, who were all under the age of 18,” said Const Maxwell Mabunda, communications officer for the Germiston SAPS.

“During questioning, the suspects allegedly told police that they had received the dagga and cigarettes from an 83-year-old woman in the area. They took the officers to the woman.”

When officers arrived at the woman’s home she was allegedly found packing dagga and cigarettes.

The woman and the six young boys were all arrested on charges of dealing in dagga and contravening the Disaster Management Act (Covid-19 Act).

“It is alleged the woman has been recruiting young boys and paying them to sell the dagga and cigarettes for her,” said Mabunda.

The suspect will appear in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court soon, while the boys were released to their parents.
