Keep going and keep healthy

A healthy body houses a healthy mind.

The saying goes: “A healthy body houses a healthy mind”.

People have spent a number of days in lockdown already and many residents have found a way to keep themselves occupied.

The isolation amid the Covid-19 pandemic can build up stress and for those struggling to get going it is now more important to set a fixed time in your daily schedule and exercise.

Mental health care is considered just as essential as body health and fitness.

Prof Renata Schoeman, board member of the Psychiatry Management Group (PsychMG), said mental well-being is vital in this time of crisis, whether or not one is suffering from a mental illness as lockdown can aggravate feelings of isolation, even more so for those already struggling with mental health issues.

“Now is the time to refocus one’s energy on improving your mental health and resilience.

“It is crucial to stay socially connected while practising physical distancing, to stay informed via credible sources of information and to keep to generally healthy habits.

“A strong individual and communal mental health status are key to remaining physically strong and socially cohesive during this crisis,” she said.

Stay fit while in lockdown

To keep going physically and mentally, one has to discipline yourself and keep to your daily activities. The entire family can join in or you can take time off and do these exercises on your own.

At home, stay safe by physical distancing and when needed to access essential goods or services keep on doing frequent hand washing and sanitising.

Remain both physically and mentally healthy by exercising at home, eating healthy foods, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, as far as possible, get enough sleep, and avoid alcohol abuse and illicit substances.

All you need is a small space which you set up for your daily fitness class, log onto video call with some distance family members and enjoy your classes each day.
