Running heroes shine

Superheroes of all kinds paid a visit to Edenvale when Rand Road Warriors (RRW) hosted the annual Edenvale Marathon.

Held in partnership with Staminogro, the event saw 7 000 runners flock to the town on March 8.

Besides being a qualifier for the Comrades Marathon, the event brought fun, joy and community spirit to the town.

Participants could participate in either the 42km marathon, 21km half-marathon, 10km run or 5km fun run.

The theme for this year’s fun run was Superheroes and saw the event raise funds for the Rainbows and Smiles Trust, a non-profit organisation.

The NPO is dedicated to providing emotional, social and financial support to children with cancer, as well as their families.

It promotes awareness of early warning signs of childhood cancer and was founded in 2009 by Bonita Suckling, whose son, who had brain cancer called anaplastic astrocytoma, died.

Member of the running club Jackie Allen said it was nice to see community members dress to the theme of this year’s fun run.

“I think most people dressed up because of the NPO and what it stands for,” said Allen.

“The community came out in their numbers to show their support for the organisation.”

Race director of the marathon and RRW Edenvale member Sharon Holton believes the fun run was successful because most people know at least one person who was affected by cancer.

“Cancer affects community members of all walks of life, we felt the passion of everyone on the day.”

Allen said once the funds have been tallied, several handovers will be made by the running club to organisations in Edenvale and the Rainbows and Smiles Trust.
