Elsburg wrestlers shine at championships

Nine wrestlers from the Elsburg Wrestling Club competed in the recent Eastern Gauteng Open Championships at Carnival City.

Nine wrestlers from the Elsburg Wrestling Club were put through their paces at one of the most prestigious events of the Eastern Gauteng Wrestling calendar – the Eastern Gauteng Open Championships.

The event was held at Carnival City’s Big Top Arena, recently, and saw 641 competitors from across South Africa competing.

Competing clubs included Battleground Wrestling Club, Bears Wrestling Club, Benoni Wrestling Club, Boksburg Wrestling Club, Bothaville Wrestling Club, Delmas Wrestling Club, Dome Wrestling Club, Eagles Wrestling Club, Elsburg Wrestling Club, Ermelo Wrestling Club, Fochville Wrestling Club, Heidelberg Wrestling Club, Johan Theron Wrestling Club, JR Wrestling Club, Klerksdorp Wrestling Club, KZN Elite Team Wrestling Club, Lydenburg Wrestling Club, Menlo Park Wrestling Club, Middelburg Wrestling Club, Mogol Wrestling Club, New Castle Cougars Wrestling Club, Next Level Wrestling club, Pretoria East Wrestling Club, Primrose Wrestling Club, Reitz Wrestling Club, Richards Bay Wrestling Club, Rustenburg Wrestling Club, Sasol Wrestling Club, Soupel Wrestling Club, Tuks Wrestling Club, Vaal Wrestling Club, Wesrand Wrestling Gymnasium and White River Wrestling Club.

Six of Elsburg’s wrestlers walked away with medals.

Their results were:

• Ugue Kabesa won a gold medal in freestyle.

• Daniella Pio won a gold medal in freestyle.

• Bronwen Smit won a silver medal in Greco Roman.

• Letoya Mbena won a bronze medal in freestyle.

• Keith Downward won a bronze medal in freestyle.

• Tobie Alberts (jnr) won a bronze medal in Greco Roman.

“Our remaining three wrestlers CJ Engelbrecht, Raymond Alberts and Tristin Booysen gave it their all during the championships, but had to bend their knees to their opponents,” said Joep Joubert, the club’s media liaison.

The next tournament on the club’s calendar is the Tuks Challenge, which will be held at the University of Pretoria.

Elsburg Wrestling Club hopes to grow its membership this year and are calling on all interested parties to visit the club in Mare Street.
