Eagles aim to close season on a high

Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club bowled their way to three wins in their Easterns Cricket League weekend matches.

The Elsburg Eagles Cricket Club continued their Easterns Cricket League campaign, over the weekend.

With just three weeks of match left in the current season, the club hopes to end on a high.

The club continued their campaign with three matches, all of which were played at the club’s home grounds, the Elsburg Sports Complex, on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The u-10 team played host to Benoni Cricket Club, while the seniors hosted Tsakane Cricket Club in the Sunday Directors League and Reiger Park Cricket Club in the Sunday Presidents League.

In the Sunday Directors League the hosts were sent in to bat first and knocked up a total of 240 runs, all out, in their 50 allotted overs.

The day’s top batsmen were Theuns Herbst, with 87 runs (not out) and Johan van Greunen, with 63 runs.

The visitors then took their turn at the crease, and were bowled out for 126 runs, in their 50 allotted overs.

This gave Elsburg a 115 run victory.

The club’s u-10 team faced Benoni Cricket Club in their weekend fixture.

Benoni batted first and set a target of 149 runs, all out, in their 25 allotted overs.

The home team then took their turn at the crease.

They were only able to knock-up a total of 104 runs, in their 25 allotted over, with two wickets in hand.

This gave Benoni a 45 run victory.

“Our u-10 side is showing massive improvement every week,” said club chairperson Martiens Grobler.

“We are starting to bat the full 25 overs, in the past we only got to 20 overs, but we can see that our young players are willing to push to the full 25 overs of batting.

“A big thing to remember with this team is that 90 per cent of the team members will only be in the correct age category next season as most of them are only playing u-9 at school and while the league they are playing is u-10”
