Wrestlers hone their skills in first tournament of the year

The Elsburg Wrestling Club welcomed clubs from across Eastern Gauteng to the recent Eastern Gauteng Hawks Tournament.

Cheers filled the evening air as young wrestlers tested their skills in the first tournament of the year.

The Eastern Gauteng Hawks Tournament, a friendly tournament hosted by the Elsburg Wrestling Club, was held at the Raptors Wrestling Club in Oak Avenue, Primrose East, recently and saw wrestlers from several different clubs competing for top honours.

The event saw 103 entrants from the Elsburg, Raptors, Brakpan, Benoni, Boksburg, Alberton and Battleground wrestling clubs taking part.

The tournament also offered the competing wrestlers a chance to get back into the swing of things and hone their skills after the festive season break ahead of the Mufasa Challenge, which will be held in Roodepoort, and the Eastern Gauteng Championships which will be held at Carnival City.

After the weigh-in and medical, which all competing wrestlers had to participate in, Mike Pio, the Elsburg Wrestling Club chairperson welcomed the crowd.

“Welcome to our tournament,” he said.

“We hope you enjoy it.”

Each club had an opportunity to complete a special entrance, complete with music, and sing a battle cry before the matches got underway.

Though no medals were awarded on the night, as the Hawks League no longer has a point system, the young wrestlers were thrilled to compete against wrestlers from other clubs in Eastern Gauteng.

“The tournament was a great success,” said Melissa Cilliers, secretary and coach at Elsburg Wrestling Club.

“Our wrestlers did so well on the mat and we as a club did well hosting the event and running the kitchen.”
