Police remind community that opening a false case is a criminal offence

Community member who opened a false hijacking case ordered to pay R3 000 fine or spend six months in prison.

While investigating a case of hijacking, which allegedly took place in March 2019, Det WO Isaac Langa discovered that the complainant had opened a false case.

“The complainant alleged when opening the case that his white Isuzu bakkie was hijacked by two unknown men on the corner of Dekema and Lantern roads, in Wadeville,” explained Const Daphney Phooko, communications officer for the Elsburg SAPS.

“Langa later discovered that the complainant lied under oath when opening the case of hijacking.

“Through further investigation it was discovered that the motor vehicle had never been hijacked.”

The accused was recently found guilty in the Germiston Magistrate’s Court, and ordered to pay a R3 000 fine or spend six months in prison.

The sentence was suspended for five years provided the accused is not found guilty of a similar offence within the suspension period.

“We urge the community not to open false cases,” said Phooko.

Elsburg SAPS station commander Col Linah Thethe commended Langa on his hard work and encouraged others to learn from his example.
