Safety tips for the community from the Germiston Flying Squad

Follow these helpful safety tips.

Const Ntombikayise Ngcobo, the communications officer for the Germiston Flying Squad, gave the community her top safety tips.

The tips are:

• Drivers must not stop when a vehicle with flashing lights flags them down as it could be criminals masquerading as police officers. Rather they must indicate to the vehicle that they are going to drive to a safe area. They can then put on their hazards and drive slowly to a safe, well-lit location like a police station or petrol station.

• With regard to house robberies, domestic workers must be instructed not to open the home for anyone. If you are expecting a service provider to visit your property, there must be a code word which is used between the service provider and the domestic worker. It is also imperative that employers communicate with their domestic workers.

• In relation to business robberies, Ngcobo stressed the importance of CCTV cameras in good working condition. “Make sure you keep them well maintained,” she said. Business owners must also keep an eye out for suspicious-looking people and watch their movements. Also try not to keep a large amount of cash on the premises and only tell trusted employees where the money is kept.
