Run raises funds to buy school shoes for underprivileged learners

Katlehong Athletics Club gives back children.

Katlehong Athletics Club recently hosted their annual School Shoe Drive Run aimed at raising funds towards school shoes for underprivileged learners.

A total of 91 pairs of school shoes were donated and R15 000 was raised from runners and individuals who donated to the project.

The run was well attended by runners from all over Gauteng and they dressed in lime and orange, the colours requested by the organisers, to increase their visibility on the road.

Learners from Nokulunga Primary School, Hleziphi Primary School and Sonqoba Primary School benefited from the campaign in 2018.

“December is the time of the year to reflect on the year that has been.

“It is time for families and friends to reconnect, for travel and for people to recoup.

“It is also the time people use to think about future plans, finances, education and health,” said Lehlohonolo Motloung, chairperson of Katlehong Athletics Club.

“It is in this spirit that we asked runners and members of the community to spare a thought for those underprivileged and destitute learners returning to school in 2020.

“We encourage the community to continue to support the School Shoe Drive.”

Shoes are symbolic of pride and give confidence to young learners knowing that they can walk to school in comfort, as opposed to barefoot.

Shoes are also a vital protection barrier between our children’s tiny soles and Africa’s rough and unforgiving terrain.

“We believe that a new pair of shoes should be tough enough to protect a young child’s feet whether it be on the playground, on the sports field or even walking home in the middle of winter,” said Motloung.
