St Catherine’s class of 2019 celebrates 100 per cent pass rate

St Catherine’s School celebrates as Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric results are released.

Learners from St Catherine’s School, in Parkhill Gardens, waited in anticipation to get their Independent Examinations Board (IEB) matric results, which were released at midnight on Monday.

The wait was worth it as the school celebrated a 100 per cent pass rate, maintaining the flawless record the school has come to expect from its learners.

“All 23 learners who sat for the Independent Examinations Board National Senior Certificate examinations passed, without a single subject failure being recorded,” explained head of school Dennis Maritz.

Twenty-one of the school’s candidates (or 91 per cent) achieved a degree pass, which qualifies them to enter a university to pursue tertiary studies.

The remaining two candidates each achieved a diploma pass, which allows them to apply for admission to other institutions of higher learning.

“The group achieved 19 A symbols and 43 B symbols which means that 40 per cent of all our subject results were higher than 70 per cent,” said Maritz.

“Our top subject was isiZulu, where eight of the 10 candidates who wrote the exam achieved a distinction.”

The school’s top achievers were head girl Joy Sithole and Mbali Ngobese.

Sithole earned distinctions in English, geography, life sciences and life orientation while Ngobese earned distinctions in isiZulu, accounting and life orientation.

Maritz was thrilled with the overall outcome of the matric exams and congratulated the learners and their parents on their achievements.

He also expressed his appreciation for senior school principal, Joanne Crosby, and her team for their dedication and hard work.

“Without their commitment and hard work, these successes would not have been possible,” Maritz said.

Mbali Ngobese was one of St Catherine’s School’s top achievers in the 2019 Independent Examinations Board National Senior Certificate examinations, she earned distinctions in isiZulu, accounting and life orientation.
