People need friends with paws

AK Events and RJ Entertainment hosted their final community market for the year in support of Animal Protection Network.

AK Events and RJ Entertainment ended off their year with not only Christmas shopping and community fun, but also in support of our furry friends.

The community market, which recently took place at The Reef Shopping Centre, went the extra mile in support of Animal Protection Network (APN).

APN was originally started in Alberton, but has now branched out to Lambton.

“Our dream is to grow and help all animals in every area,” said Sharon Huson, one of the directors of APN.

“We help feed people’s dogs if they cannot afford food for them, as well as take the dogs to the vet if they need medical care.”

Zuerina Venter, also a director of APN, does a lot of fieldwork by visiting areas and feeding animals in need.

“We also have a network we use when people report their cat or dog missing as we go and find them,” said Venter.

“Everything we do for the animals comes from our own pockets,” said Huson.

APN also works with Olivia Stirling, who is from A New Hope Dog Rescue, which is a non-profit organisation based in Alberton.

A New Hope Dog Rescue is dedicated to rescuing dogs of all shapes and sizes.

Stirling helps by taking in strays as APN does not have a shelter as yet.

“We help Sterling with food donations for the strays she looks after,” said Huson.

APN does outreach projects with René Parker from Cause 4 Paws.

Cause 4 Paws is a non-profit animal welfare organisation that is situated at Rietvlei Lifestyle Centre in Alberton.

Cause 4 Paws focuses on animal sterilisation, vaccination and outreach programmes throughout Gauteng.

Parker often works with starving and neglected animals in Jackson Drift informal settlement, Eikenhof.

APN participated at the market by hosting a large stall selling handmade items such as kitchen aprons, photo frames, pencil stands, beaded bracelets and hanging wall crafts to raise money to help rescued animals.

During the event the organisation received a generous donation of dog food from Hyundai Germiston.

AK Events also sponsored dog food.

RJ Entertainment kept the market lively with some good music as people looked at the stalls and at the classic cars on display.
