Unite to end violence against the abuse of women and girls

Painting the world orange to stop abuse against women and girls.

“There is help out there, you are not alone,” said Wilna Berry, the coordinator of the Elsburg SAPS Trauma Centre.

Bertha Gxowa Hospital Care Centre teamed up with Elsburg SAPS Trauma Centre and took part in 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children event by spreading awareness about the abuse of women and girls recently in Buhle Park.

The Orange World Campaign, which occurs on November 25, was designed by the Unite To End Violence Against Women Campaign as a means to demonstrate solidarity in eliminating all forms of violence.

The colour orange symbolises a brighter future ahead, as well as a future free of violence.

Orange is also used as the colour of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women.

Sister Hazel Moagi, the operations manager of the Bertha Gxowa Care Centre, and Elsburg SAPS Trauma Centre volunteers joined forces to hand out pamphlets, answer questions and reach out to the community about the abuse of women and girls.

“People must remember that it is not just for 16 days, but for 365 days a year,” said Berry.

“Women and girls need to know that we are here for them and they need to speak out if they have been abused.”

Berry added that women and girls are often too scared to go to the police station to open a case, but they should not be afraid because the police are not allowed to refuse to open a case for them.

The Elsburg SAPS Trauma Centre has also put together a comfort pack for rape victims, so that after they have been examined at the Bertha Gxowa Hospital Care Centre they can go to the trauma centre for further care.

There is also a 24-hour call centre to report abuse available for victims, who can remain anonymous if they prefer.

You can contact the call centre on 0800 428 428 or the Elsburg SAPS Trauma Centre on 078 708 9965.
