Young sportswoman thrilled with award

Grade 11 learner excels on the athletics track.

Nadia Calore, a Grade 11 learner at Assumption Convent School, capped off her outstanding athletics season when she was awarded the prestigious Sportswoman of the Year trophy at Assumption’s final assembly last Friday.

School principal Neville Workman on congratulating Nadia said it was an award “richly deserved”.

Nadia also received her half colours for athletics and was re-awarded with an athletics scroll.

If that wasn’t due recognition, earlier in the week at the year-end sports awards evening, Nadia walked off with the following accolades:

• Athlete of the Year.

• Top Middle Distance Athlete (for the 800m and 1 500m).

• Fastest 400 Athlete of the Season.

• Gold certificate for her contribution to athletics.

Some of the highlights of Nadia’s athletics season were:

• Making the Central District cross-country team for the fifth consecutive year.

• Winning the senior girls event at the Catholic Schools Cross-Country Competition for the second consecutive year.

• Winning the middle distance treble (400m, 800m and 1 500m) at the Catholic Schools inter-high event for the second consecutive year.

• Placing in the top three in all three middle distance events at the annual girls’ inter-high finals for the second consecutive year.

• Consistently achieving school qualifying times and improving her personal best times at all the major events.

• Winning all four of the track events she entered at the Assumption inter-house athletics day.

The young athlete displayed great courage, dedication and determination throughout a long and highly competitive season.
