16 Days of Activism: Women need to be educated to be empowered

Local clinic holds campaign against gender-based violence.

Women and children flocked to the Klopper Park Clinic last Friday to learn more about gender-based violence.

The theme of the day was Stop Violence Towards Women and Children and various stakeholders, including representatives from POWA, SANBS, EMPD, health promoters from Ekurhuleni and the Bedfordview SAPS, spoke to the assembled women about their rights and what they should do in the case of abuse.

The event was organised by Sister Monica Yaso, the health promoter at the Klopper Park Clinic.

“Our community is growing very well and now we also have an informal settlement in Elandsfontein which we service, which we haven’t had before.

“The day was aimed at introducing our services to the community, as well as educating women regarding gender-based violence,” said Monica.

“We must educate to empower.

“Knowledge is power and women must know where to go to seek help.”

Connie Dlamini, a social auxiliary worker from POWA, explained the organisation’s services to the women and told them if they need assistance they can speak to them.

The importance of donating blood was then discussed by Palesa Kepheane, a donor educator from SANBS.

She explained the process of donating blood and who is allowed to donate.

Sgt Ntswaki Modiga, from the Bedfordview SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit, urged the women to report any women or child abuse to their nearest police station.

The women were invited to ask the stakeholders any questions they may have and contact them if they need assistance.
