Delville clean-up a great success

LamDel Residents Association (RA) held a successful neighbourhood clean-up last Saturday at the Menin Road circle in Delville.

Determined to make a difference in the community, members of the LamDel Residents Association (RA) and 42 volunteers met at Menin Road circle in Delville last Saturday to clean up the area.

This was the second LamDel RA clean-up, with the organisation previously tackling the intersection of Webber and Beacon roads.

“Our clean-up was a huge success,” said Lornette Joseph, LamDel RA chairperson.

“It was a fun two hours and the area looked so much better when we were done.

“Of the 42 volunteers who joined the clean-up efforts, 19 were children between the ages of five and 17 years old, and they didn’t even know that they would be getting community service points for their hard work.

“They only realised they were getting community service points when they were asked for their details.”

LamDel RA believes projects like this help instil a love and sense of pride in the community, especially when everyone gets involved and does their bit.

“We have received one or two complaints from people who feel we should leave the cleaning up of suburbs to the metro, as it is their job,” said Lornette.

“While they are right, the metro simply doesn’t have the manpower to get to everywhere they need to be and it’s up to us to fill the gaps and to take pride in our environment, our community and properties.

“We need active citizenship.”

Though the organisation had hoped to hold a clean-up event on the third Saturday of every month, weather permitting, they have decided to skip December and instead have begun planning for January.

“December is such a busy time of year, so we have decided that we won’t have a clean-up in December, but will be raring to go on January 18,” said Lornette.

The next clean-up will see LamDel RA members and volunteers cleaning Parkhill Road.
