Public meeting leaves many disappointed

Councillor Wendy Morgan speaks out following a disappointing Ward 36 public meeting.

Many residents who attended the Ward 36 public meeting, last Monday night, were left disappointed.

The meeting, which took place at Laerskool Die President, located in Astronomy Road in Fishers’ Hill, was scheduled to be attended by a number of metro officials, but only one metro representative arrived.

Items on the agenda were meant to include:

• Feedback from the metro’s customer care manager Robert Pienaar.

• An update on what electrical upgrades have been done in the area and what still needs to be done from the head of department (HOD) for the metro’s energy department Mark Wilson.

• Feedback on the continuous water outages affecting Sunnyridge and surrounds from HOD of the metro’s water and sanitation department Mduduzi Shabangu.

• Feedback on billing queries, disconnections, re-connections, meter readers, meter inspections and illegal connections from HOD for the metro’s finance department Lihle Ndezelu.

• Feedback on the stormwater drain maintenance in the area from HOD for the metro’s roads and stormwater department Sizwe Cele.

• Feedback on noise and drinking in public complaints from Ockert Bezuidenhout of the EMPD.

• Feedback on building without plans and overcrowding in the ward from HOD for the metro’s city planning department Palesa Tsita.

“We, as ward councillors, are required to host public meetings,” said Morgan.

“To my dismay the only department that sent a representative to the meeting was the EMPD.

“I thank them for the feedback they gave the community and for noting residents’ concerns.”

Morgan feels that the metro’s department officials are showing no regard for the community.

“It seems that there is just no regard for the residents and their concerns and issues,” she said.

“No wonder the community does not to want to attend public meetings.

“This really was a waste of everyone’s time, and the community is once again left with no feedback from the departments.”

Morgan thanked the residents who did make the effort to attend the meeting, and apologised for the inconvenience.
