What lies beneath the surface of your tyre

Make sure your tyres are in good condition before heading on a road trip.

Christmas holidays are just around the corner, which is also a perfect opportunity to take the whole family on a nice road trip.

Road trips alone are an awesome way of spending the holidays, but you also want to stay safe while you are having fun.

One most important safety factor is making sure your tyres are in the best condition for driving.

Michelin marketing manager Luc Fayolle said when it comes to your safety and driving pleasure, your tyres are critical.

This means you need to take every precautionary step to ensure your tyres are roadworthy.

Here are a few safety tips to ensure your tyres will not ruin your holiday journey:

• Always make sure you have a spare tyre in your boot and that the spare is pumped and in excellent condition. Double check to make sure you have the correct tools, for example, a jack, lug wrench, wheel lock and an extension bar for lowering the spare and alignment studs.

• Your tyre pressure should be accurate. The best time to check tyre pressure is when your tyres are cold. If you are not sure what your exact tyre pressure should be then you can check your owner’s manual. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

• Make sure you regularly rotate your tyres. This helps extends the life span of your tyres.

• Tyres should be replaced every five to seven years, so make sure you replace your tyres, especially when they become too smooth.
