“The theme for the tournament was Taking a Stand Against Gender-based Violence,” said Dumi Masondo, one of the organisers of the event.

He and his co-organiser, Siyabonga Jwara, feel the tournament, which was attended by more than 7 500 guests over the two days, had an impact on everyone involved, players and spectators alike.

“Our country is in crisis,” said Jwara.

“We are losing our loved ones each and every day to gender-based violence.

“So we decided to take a stand and teach our up-and-coming football legends that women are humans and they need to be loved, protected and respected.”

Super Eagles FC, from Germiston Extension Nine, were crowned the winners of the Dream Cup and walked away with not just the tournament trophy and gold medals, but R5 000 and a full football kit branded with the Dream Cup logo.

Mashashane FC, from Dukathole, who were the runners-up also received a full football kit branded with the Dream Cup logo and R2 500 in prize money.

“During the tournament, a man of the match was named after each match,” explained Masondo.

“There was also a prize for the top goalscorer, goalkeeper and player of the tournament.”
