“The game was a fight against relegation,” explained club chairperson, Peter Oliver.

“Germiston were just six league points ahead of Zwide heading into the match, with bottom of the log Boksburg FC having already been relegated.”

With the treat of relegation hanging over them, Zwide started the match strong, making their intention to win clear.

The pressure caught Germiston off-guard, but 10 minutes into the match they were able to settle into their game plan.

After several wayward shots at goal from Takudswa Jack, Eddie Mokotedi, Chad Nel and Dembi Molemela, Germiston were able to inch the ball past the Zwide goalkeeper, moments before half-time, with some good team work from Mokotedi, Molemela and team captain Tunda Rafai.

This gave the home team a 1-0 lead heading into the break.

Germiston continued the second half where they had left the first, putting constant pressure on the visiting team’s defense.

Their hard work was rewarded seven minutes into the half when Banti Hlowisi made a break down the right field.

A well-timed kick to Jack earn Germiston their second goal of the match.

Zwide looked down and out, but refused to give up.

In the 65th minute their tenacity paid off when they sneaked the ball past an unprepared Germiston defence.

The Zwide striker made no mistakes and shot the ball past Germiston goalkeeper Clement Baloyi.

After several more attempts at goal the home team was dealt a blow when they lost a defender to injury.

“The shuffle in the defence was detrimental to Germiston,” said Oliver.

Zwide took advantage of the change and were able to score another goal, leaving the teams tied 2-2 in the dying moments of the game.

In the closing minutes of the match Germiston had a free kick.

Unfortunately, Jack sent the ball crashing into the cross-bar and Germiston were left to rue their missed chances.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw.

Germiston’s reserve team were defeated 3-2 by their Zwide counterparts.
