EMPD arrest 11 speedsters over long weekend

EMPD members targeted speedsters on Ekurhuleni’s highways.

The EMPD High Speed Unit (HSU) arrested eleven motorists over the long weekend on the R21, N12 and N3 highways for excessive speeding.

The operations were conducted between August 9 and 11.

All the arrested drivers were male.

Five motorists in sedans, aged between 26 and 40, were nabbed on the R21 southbound, between Griffiths Road and the N12 exit for doing speeds of between 141 and 186km/h in this 100km/h zone, last Friday, between 11am and 3pm.

A further three drivers were arrested on the N12 westbound between Sam Greene bridge and the Germiston exit last Saturday morning, between 7am and 8.30am.

They were caught doing 163, 164 and 184km/h on this stretch of the highway which is a 120km/h zone.

Operations conducted on the N3 southbound, last Sunday, at the Rand Airport exit, as well as on the R59 southbound between Train Bridge and Kliprivier yielded another three motorists doing 162, 167 and 185km/h.

All the arrested speedsters were released on R1 000 bail each after being charged for reckless and negligent driving.

They are expected to appear in respective magistrate’s courts soon.
