Germiston thrilled with Super League win

Germiston City Football Club faced Sporting Football Club in the Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League, last Saturday.

Germiston City Football Club, still on the hunt for an elusive Eastern Local Football Association (ELFA) Super League win, played host to the ever-improving Sporting Football Club, from Turffontein.

Both teams were eager to get started as the whistle blew and the match began at the Germiston City Sports Club, last Saturday.

In the opening minutes of the game both teams created early opportunities at goal but missed these chances.

Squandered chances by the home team’s AnthonyUzochkwu, Takuszwa Jack and Eddie Mokoatedi left the Germiston bench and supporters wondering if these missed chances would come back and haunt the team.

Germiston tenacity paid off in the 42nd minute when Junior Morino latched onto a loose ball, and with only the keeper to beat, was able to find the back of the net and put Germiston 1-0 up just before half-time.

The opening 10 minutes of the second half were tense, with a Sporting player being sent off the field for abuse.

However, Germiston didn’t allow this to slow them down and Mokoatedi soon found Morino, after breaking down the right of the field, who to score his and the team’s second goal of the match.

The drama continued on and off the field with the Germiston and Sporting benches exchanged some strong words after the Sporting coach disputed several calls by the match officials.

A poor clearance by Germiston center back Chad Nel allowed Sporting to pull one goal back.

In the 66th minute Mokotedi made a run down the right flank beating three Sporting players on the way and found himself in the Sporting goal area.

A cross-kick from Mokotedi found Uzochuwu who scored Germiston’s third goal.

Mokotedi sealed the victory for Germiston with a fourth goal before the final whistle sounded.

Germiston were thrilled with the result.

Germiston’s reserve team drew their match 1-1 to complete a good week for the club.
