Sewage leak causes a stink in Marlands

Marlands resident concerned sewage will flow through Germiston’s water system to the Vaal.

Weeks long sewage leaks in the park on the corner of Pine Avenue and Wits Street, Marlands, are nothing new to residents.

The GCN visited the park last Tuesday with John Jordan, who explained that the latest leaks have been ongoing for over a month, despite complaints to the metro.

“The sewage leaks into the small dam running through the park,” said a concerned Jordan.

“From there it flows to Elspark to the reed beds and then to the Vaal.”

Residents living close to the park not only have to deal with a terrible smell, but also a large number of flies and mosquitoes.

“The birds also eat the sewage which lays dammed on the ground,” said Jordan.

The parts of the park affected by the sewage leaks cannot be enjoyed by the community.

Sewage lies on the grass in the park on the corner of Pine Avenue and Wits Street in Marlands.

The GCN sent a query to Ward 92 councillor Tiziana Plaskitt, who claimed she was only told about the leak last Monday, despite claims from the community that she had been informed a number of times before.

“This issue has been escalated to the water and sanitation department for urgent attention,” said Plaskitt.

“I have followed up with the community to see if the team has been on site and have followed up with the department. As far as I am aware, the issue is still within the service level standards of Ekurhuleni.

“I take issues like this very seriously due to the environmental impact it has on the community and the Marlands spruit.”

A query was also sent to the metro, but at the time of going to press no comment had been received.
