Children’s rights in the spotlight this Child Protection Week

Primrose police began their Child Protection Week campaign with a visit to each of Primrose’s informal settlements.

National Child Protection Week is celebrated annually and runs from May 28 to June 4.

Child Protection Week aims to raise awareness of the rights of children, as articulated in the Children’s Act of 2005.

The Primrose police kicked off the awareness campaign in their precinct last Saturday with a roadshow in Primrose’s three informal settlements.

During the roadshow, children were taught more about their rights through entertainment, before they received toys, sweets and snacks donated by Chubby Chums for the Children’s Homes and Avril Elizabeth Home.

During the campaign, Sgt Styles Maome, communications officer for the Primrose police, encouraged children to report any criminal activity they see, as this will help police fight crime in their areas.

He further encouraged them not to bully each other.

“Bullying can lead one to becoming a criminal,” he warned.

The Primrose SAPS Crime Prevention Youth Desk members were thanked for their efforts during the roadshow.
