Bowlers take to the green for national tournament

The National Disability Bowls Tournament will be played from June 15 to 22 at the Delville Germiston and Boksburg bowling clubs.

The National Disability Bowls Tournament will take place in Ekurhuleni from June 15 to 22.

The tournament, which was first played in 1964, has grown to be an important and popular event that attracts bowlers from all over the country.

This year’s event will see 50 physically challenged and 36 visually impaired bowlers take to the greens.

Ekurhuleni Bowls (EKB) will host the tournament, which will be played at the Delville Germiston and Boksburg bowling clubs.

“The reason these clubs were selected was due to the fact that together they have the number of greens required for the players and the infrastructure of the clubs can facilitate or be altered to facilitate the various challenges the players have,” said Alana Warrender from the Delville Germiston Bowling Club.

“Accommodation also played a part in the selection of the clubs and we are grateful to Muriel Brand School that has been kind enough to let us use their facilities during the school holidays for those ‘out of towners’ who require a place to rest their weary bodies each night.”

The tournament will start with a meet-and-greet at the Delville Germiston Bowling Club.

“It really creates a great atmosphere when the players have a chance to rekindle friendships.

“It’s also a chance for the newbies to meet everyone before the games begin,” said Warrender.

The competition will officially start on June 16, with pairs and singles matches being played each day at the two clubs.

“Two games will be played per day between 9am and 4pm, to ensure we can get through the full programme,” explained Warrender.

“All categories will play in a round robin, ensuring up to 14 games are played over the seven days.

“The finals will be played on June 22.

“This year’s event will also see six top players from the Ekurhuleni District receive their EKB district colours.”

The community, who are encouraged to attend the matches, can expect to see top class bowling action, with top provincial players and several Protea players set to compete.
