Elsburg thrilled with Kestrel League victory

Elsburg Rugby Club hosted Vanderbijlpark Rugby Club in their last game of the first round of the Kestrel League.

After a disappointing loss against East Rand Police Rugby Club, the Elsburg Rugby Club bounced back with a nail-biting 33-28 win against Vanderbijlpark Rugby Club on Saturday.

The match, the last game in the first round of the Kestrel League, was played at the Elsburg Sports Complex and was action-packed from start to finish.

Vanderbijlpark were the first to get three points on the scoreboard after conceding a penalty against the home team.

In the 20th minute of the first half, Elsburg’s Rudolf Erasmus got the team’s first try and fly half Rudie Wessels the first successful conversion, pushing the home team ahead of their rivals.

The visiting team soon replied with two tries of their own, taking the lead back from Elsburg.

The back-and-forth play continued this time with a try from Elsburg’s Andries Kemp who broke through Vanderbijlpark’s defensive line, right in front of the try line, and with the help of his teammates, added another five points to the home team’s tally.

Wessels added a further two points, after another successful conversion, bringing the score to 15-14 in favour of Vanderbijlpark at the half-time break.

The second half, which was just as physical and tough as the first, opened with the visiting team scoring their third try of the match, with a successful conversion, increasing their lead.

Vanderbijlpark then conceded another penalty against the home team, giving them an
11-point lead in the game.

Refusing to give up, Elsburg pushed forward, determined to close the gap.

Soon captain Jaco Nagel scored a try for the home team, followed by another successful conversion by fly half Wessels.

Not backing down, Elsburg’s Marinus van Vuuren soon had his chance to visit the try line.

His try was soon followed by a try from Erasmus, his second in the match.

This final push from the team was enough for them to clinch victory and the match ended 33-28 in favour of the home team.

Elsburg gave another great performance as supporters and their sponsor, King of Cars, cheered them on, and were thrilled with the win.

The men of the match were Wynne de Jager (forward) and Willem van der Heever (backline).

The team now look forward to the second round of the Kestrel League, which will kick-off with a home match against Katlehong Rugby Club, this Saturday.
